Colonoscopy

What is colonoscopy?

Colonoscopy is the insertion of a lubricated flexible lit tube through the anus that enables examination of the rectum and the entire colon (also known as the large intestine) and sometimes the very end of the small intestine, known as the terminal ileum.

A colonoscopy is a generally safe, outpatient procedure that takes approximately 30-45 minutes and could save your life.

Facts about Colon Cancer

Colon cancer is the second leading cause of cancer deaths in America. A screening colonoscopy is an excellent means by which to detect polyps, which are precancerous growths. During the colonoscopy, polyps seen will be removed and submitted to pathology. By removing the polyps, the risk of colon cancer is significantly decreased.

National guidelines recommend regular screening by colonoscopy beginning at age 50, or if you are African American to start screening at age 45. If you have a family history of colon cancer, the recommendation is to start earlier – please call us to clarify when you should have your first colonoscopy.

Scheduling a visit for colonoscopy consultation is easy. And we now have colon lavage – a wash from below – no need to drink the usual bowel prep – read more here.

When you call we will start with your name, phone and email contact details, name of primary care MD, when last seen and insurance details. We will need key information about you, including details of your medical history, medications, allergies. If possible, this includes copies of prior procedure and pathology reports.

Please understand that a screening colonoscopy is one performed when you have no symptoms: such as abdominal pain, changes in bowel habits, bleeding, unexplained weight loss, or any other gastrointestinal issue. A colonoscopy may not be the best initial examination for you, and would likely be diagnostic, not screening if indicated.

Patients with significant illnesses, such as poorly controlled diabetes, cardiac disease, breathing or kidney problems, or any other history that may increase the risk of a routine screening colonoscopy may not be candidates for a procedure. Such patients also need to make an appointment for consultation, so you have a safe and beneficial experience, as appropriate.

We look forward to seeing you soon!
